Beska Monastery
The monastery Beska is a monastery that is located on Skadar Lake on the same named island.
As the majority of the monasteries on Skadar Lake it is connected with the dynasty Balsici that was famous by the construction of monasteries.
Monastery has two churches – church of Sveti Djordje and the church of Sveta Bogorodica (St. Virgin). It is thought that this monastery was built in XIV century. Smaller church, which is dedicated to Bogorodica (Virgin), raised Jelena Blasic, daughter of Prince Lazar and the wife of Djuradj II Stracimirovic Balsic in 1400, which has been carved in the stone above the doors of the church. Grave of Jelena Baslic is in this church.
There is no more precise data about the construction of the older church, but it is presumed that its patron was Djurdje II Stratimirovic-Balsic, and that it was founded in the late 16th century.
It is a larger single-nave building with a cupola, spacious priprat and large bell-tower. The church is small in size with single-nave base and a slightly folded arch, which are characteristics of the sanctuaries built in the time of Crnojevic family rule.
Similar to Starcevo, the Beska Monastery played a significant role in the spiritual life of Zeta, as intensive copywriting activity was carried out in it.
Nikola I Petrovic renewed the church of Bogorodica, which was damaged at the beginning of XX century, for the health of his wife, Queen Milena.
Numerous cultural-historical monuments as well as archeological locations, monastery complexes and fortifications are widely scattered all over the Skadar lake basin, and the large number of islands carry evidence that even in the XIV and XV centuries this area represented a significant cultural center.
The most important monasteries on Lake Skadar are: the oldest monastery (built between 1376 and 1378) known as the Starceva Gorica (dedicated to the Virgin Mary) on the same island, Monastery Moracnik, Kom, Kosmac, Lower Brceli, Tophana, Krajinska and Vranjina, Upper Brceli and Orahovo.
