Map of Niksic
Niksic
Niksic is situated in north-central Montenegro. It is located at the centre of the spacious Niksic field (Nikšićko polje), a karst plain. The plain is surrounded by inhospitable rocky mountainous terrain, a typical landscape of western Montenegro. The city itself is located at the foot of the Trebjesa hill. Zeta river originates in the Niksic field, and flows near the city of Niksic.
Old city Onogost, founded in the fourth century as a Roman military fortress at the crossroads of important routes that connected the proper territories and adjacent areas. Liberation from the Turks in 1877 brings new settlers, gives a new impulse, there is a new spirit, it shows willingness and determination to "new well-Montenegro, which will, in addition to ancient heroism, wreathe with rays of culture and civilization." This orientation meant a desire for a new city next to the "old and rotten," Turkish town.
This desire was realized with production of the first regulatory plan that was designed in 1884, which represents a concept of formation of solid urban structure by applying the model to a renaissance - baroque scheme of ideal cities. The plan was made by engineer Joseph Slade by the ordered of King Nichola. City has formed its backbone, and the construction of a number of representative objects (the Church, the Palace, a complex of parks, Emperors bridge) established important town landmarks.
Niksic is, alongside Podgorica, one of the biggest industrial centres of Montenegro. A Steel mill (Nikšićka Željezara), bauxite mine, Trebjesa brewery (Nikšićka Pivara) and many more are concentrated in this city. Niksic beer is a very palatable beer popular well beyond the borders of Montenegro,
Cultural and historical monuments, natural beauty, geographical and climatic conditions make Niksic area as an attractive tourist area. Niksic is very important in the development of transit tourism, because it connects the Montenegrin coast with colorful and well-known beauties of Durmitor and its surroundings in the most indirect way.
