Pluzine

 

 

 

The Municipality of Pluzine occupies the southwest part of Montenegro’s high mountains in region of Piva. The term "Piva" comes from the name of the Piva River. At the place where the rivers Komarnica, Piva and Vrbnica once eroded the surrounding rocks, looking for an easier way in the arms of the attractive canyons with a full length of 42 km is now located the Piva Lake.

 

On the forested slopes above the Lake, not far from the old town of Pluzine, there is the new town of Pluzine is located. The old town Pluzine before the establishment of the artificial lake for needs of the Hydro Power Plant "Piva" and the flooding off the canyons of Piva, Komarnica and Vrbnica had to be relocated on new location during the construction of dam on the Piva River. When the Hydro Power Plant "Piva" started working 1975. and consequently a part of the territory of the town was permanently submerged by the Piva Lake and a new town was built on the nearby hill on the shore of the lake.

 

The Piva Monastery used to be at the source of the Piva River, but due to submersion and construction of hydro power plant it was relocated to 840 meters, which was a unique construction project of monastery displacement altogether with original frescoes. The project was very complex bearing in mind the fact that it is a monumental temple which was painted inside with 1.260 square meters of wall paintings of great value. With the involvement of local and international experts in conservation and restoration of cultural properties the unique undertaking of relocating an entire monastery stone by stone was successfully completed.

 

Situated in beautiful surroundings, with peaks of Durmitor, Volujak and Ledenica in the distance, Pluzine carries the title of the youngest town in the region. Beautiful nature and builders gave the town something special which remains in the memory of those who visit this town.

 

Take some water from the river which is determined to become lake - and there is a mystique of a marvellous nature which surround wonderful town Pluzine.
