Church of St. Nicholas,

Kotor

Saint Nicholas is the most important Orthodox Church in Kotor. Located in the northern part of the old town and occupies a position on St. Luke's Square. It was built in the early twentieth century, at foundations of an older building that was destroyed by fire in the nineteenth century.

The building of the church started in 1902 according to the plans of Ciril Ivekovic and according to the inscriptions on the façade it was finished in 1909. It was built in the Pseudo-Byzantine style as one-nave church. The church has and a large cupola which rises above the rooftops, while the details were done in a Romanesque style.

The main façade is framed with two bell towers, with its black domes topped by golden crosses that were a gift from Russia. On the second floor hangs a Serbian flag. Just above the entrance there is a marvellous mosaic.

The silver pieces is impressive ranging from small and large candle holders to enormous chandeliers.

Of special value in the church is iconostasis of the church made in 1908. by the Czech painter Frantisek Ziegler.

Nearby is the church treasury with a rich collection of icons, art and crafts, documents and ecclesiastical garb. The church possesses and numerous other valuables that are generally attached them wealthy family of Kotor.

Breathe in the smell of incense and beeswax in this relatively unadorned Orthodox church. The silence, the iconostasis with its silver bas-relief panels, the dark wood against grey walls, the filtered light through the dome and the simple stained glass create a mystical atmosphere.
